Honestly! As we were pulling out of No 4 Road strawberry fields that very song started playing, Strawberry Fields Forever…all the while our Jimmy was perfumed with fresh strawberries lovingly picked by my husband James. Could there have been a better moment?
I had every intention of participating in “MY” idea to go pick our own strawberries but natures little creatures put a quick stop to that. For those who know me yes…it was a spider. My strawberry adventure was done. I became camera person and instructor!
We had visited another farm in that area between No 3 & 4 Road. It was a lovely farm and surprisingly busy for the small selection of vegetables. We took the opportunity to purchase local baby carrots $1.49 a bunch, beets $1.59 a bunch, new potatoes at .79 cents a pound and 2 lbs of fresh raspberries for $4.00.
I would hope that some of the Richmond restaurants work out some special pricing and take the time to visit these farms for fresh local produce. I remember Tai On farms would give me 50 lb cases of new potatoes for $15.00 and huge fresh heads of romain for .50 cents each. Well worth the trip.
I wanted berries at their freshest to add to my protein shakes and felt rather than purchase frozen berries at ridiculous prices that I would freeze my own. I’ll wash, remove the stems and lay them out on trays and freeze separately. Once frozen double bag them in freezer bags and use them as needed.
When blueberry season begins, mid July? I’ll do the same thing, freeze fresh from the fields. If I do 10lbs of each berry they’ll last for 4 months in the freezer.
So this is my strawberry picking adventure. What a beautiful day it was and I will gladly take James to pick strawberries for us again next year!

Are those strawberries on the photo the ones you picked there? So deliciously looking. I wish I could go to a farm like that and buy fresh produce from there.
Nothing beats fresh fruits and veggies.

They sure are!
So sweet and what powerful little bursts of flavour too. You know my girlfriend Katie took her little one year old daughter for an outing strawberry picking. Not was it an amazing photography opportunity for her daughter she said it was so wonderful and tons of fun. You should just make a day of it, seasons close to being done but we’re moving into blueberry picking season here in Richmond pretty soon. I’ve put the small strawberries ones into a gingery summer fruit chutney and froze the rest for smoothies for when they are out of season. This weekend I’m heading out to get some raspberries, blackberries and some more strawberries to make jam. I love this time of year!
Cheers.

yeah, just wish Richmond wasn’t so far (my husband hates driving far, and I still didn’t get the driver’s license yet
I’ve planted some strawberries on our patio and my daughter is collecting and eating them when they’re ripe

That’s alright, home grown is always the tastiest!
